Dr. Guillermo Contreras is well-known in Guatemala as the prosthodontist who successfully treats the most complex dental restorations that may be beyond the skills of most normal dentists. He is highly experienced in restoring and replacing teeth after a traumatic injury, as well as creating new smiles for children born with genetic facial deficits. He is expert at correcting delicate and complicated dental abnormalities from a medical and artistic point of view to the 100% satisfaction of the patient.
When internal and cardiac surgeons require a dental exam to rule out any possibility of oral infection or disease prior to surgery, they call on Dr. Contreras to perform the oral investigation, as he is professionally certified and experienced in this field. His findings and reports will support the surgeons’ decisions, to assure the best possible outcome for a successful procedure.
Choosing to have dental implants is a substantial investment and requires serious consideration. Dr. Contreras believes in empowering patients to make their own informed choices, so he patiently and honestly explains to them how to choose the highest quality and get the best value for your money. Dental Design collaborates with the best manufacturers, like Keystone Dental, with advanced biomaterials, or Nobel Biocare (The Titan of Titanium), to be sure of long-term satisfaction and reliability.
Dr. Contreras warns patients: “Some other clinics offer lower prices because the titanium used in the implant has contaminates, so they don’t integrate well and could cause serious infection deep in the bone.” Implants from Korea, China or Brazil could be softer, and prone to breakage and infection. At Dental Design, the highest quality implant package, including titanium implant, surgical procedure, healing cap, abutment, and permanent porcelain crown is Q13,000 or about US$1800.
Dr. Contreras understands and communicates with his patients about how poor oral health can directly affect the entire body. For example, strep bacteria in the mouth can travel to cartilage and joints. Rheumatic fever can deposit the bacteria in scars causing life-threatening disease. In diabetic patients, infections in dental cavities and roots can be more aggressive, and need to be controlled to maintain a consistent treatment plan.
With the high-tech capabilities of the Dental Design clinic, Dr. Contreras can perform a molar extraction with immediate replacement in the same day. There are only four dentists in Guatemala City able to offer such fast and safe results. With a state of the art 3-D scanner on-site in the clinic, they are able to take the digital image at the Dental Design clinic, then send it overnight to Sweden to have the abutment and crown custom-made in zirconia or other materials.
As a member of the Academy of Osseointegration and a highly experienced implantologist with over 6,000 successful dental implants placed, Dr Contreras has the special skills needed to assure complete oral health, and to restore smiles to the best they can be – both beautiful and functional.

Dr. Guillermo “Willy” Contreras of Dental Design is one of the four importers of dental implants to Guatemala, and owns the largest inventory of grade A+ implants, including the Keystone brand. Keeping quality material standards high, they carry only the best implants available from Europe and the United States.
Implants are used to replace a missing root, filling the space of a lost or extracted tooth. Implant crowns can last 10-15 years, so easy access for removal and replacement is important. Dentists concerned for the long-term maintenance do not generally cement crowns in place, as they should be screwed into the implants, being easier to remove, evaluate and replace if necessary.
A permanent bridge can appear the same as implants to replace missing teeth, but with no replacement for the root, the void under the gums will invite bone loss and structural instability.
For the benefit of international patients with limited time in Guatemala, Dr. Contreras can perform the first three procedures of an implant all at one time, with no healing time in between.

We are Denis and Marie Laurin from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. We traveled to Guatemala in 2009 and some friends recommended us to Dental Design clinic in Guatemala City. We made the appointment from home so it was a very easy process.
When we arrived at the clinic we received a warm welcome from the doctors and its staff, we found a clinic that works with high technology. At the end of the day we established our next appointments for the next 10 days and they gave us the costs for the next treatment.
We had root canal treatment, new crown, and new partial. All the work was done very professional and the price we agreed was respected.
We strongly recommend Dental Design clinic, because we were very satisfied with the worked and the treatment we received.
The clinic is located in zone 10 of Guatemala City, a very safe zone, with hotels and restaurants near.

I had an excellent experience at Dental Design, very kindly service and excellent work, the best work I can get in Central America right now.
I got some root canal treatments, crowns, cleaning and all of them were excellent. The service I received was a world class service, and it compares to the best clinics I´ve ever seen in North America.
Absolutely I will come back and recommend Dental Design to everyone from the United States, Canada or in Europe.

My experience at Dental Design was absolutely fantastic, I feel absolutely fantastic when I come here. I had all my teeth removed and I had prosthetics on the lower and upper with implants, it is working very well I can eat whatever I want to.
Absolutely I will recommend Dental Design.
Thank you very much to Dr. Contreras.

Just wanted to thank you again for all you do! We had a really great experience with everything in Guatemala! I have referred Guatemala Medical Travel and the dentists (Dr. Contreras and Dr. Alfaro) to several people already, including my parents, who just may be coming for periodontal cleanings! After having the first phase of the implants, I’m feeling great! I’m having minimal pain but under control with meds and I slept fine. I’m doing great – All in all, everything is better than expected!
From Jim and Laura Thornburgh, July 2016
Dental Design is the best dental clinic I have ever been to in my life, the treatments the doctors did to me where more than ok, way beyond good, excellent.
All the personnel of the clinic treated me like a very important person, I got a lot of personal attention which I really appreciated. All the service process is really good, and everything that I needed was done perfectly.
For sure I will recommend Dental Design and I´ll be coming back. Guatemala is a great country and a lot of people are surprised about the sophistication of medical services that are provided.
The process to come here to a medical service is easier if you got a coordinator, but the personnel here at the clinic are also very helpful.

Public service and caring for the less fortunate is a way of life in the Latin culture.
Most visitors to the lovely village of San Juan la Laguna at Lake Atitlan see hard-working farmers, organized shop-keepers and creative visual artists. However, Dr. Contreras sees groups of young and old people in need of extensive dental care that would not otherwise be available to them due to the cost and distance.
Together with “Dentists With Hearts”, a medical group from Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Contreras was instrumental in creating the San Juan Dental Clinic. International donations provided $8000 to build the clinic, and to hire dental students from San Carlos University to supervise the daily operations.
Dr. Contreras and other dental specialists volunteer their time every year to provide necessary dental care to Guatemalans in need. As a result, every resident of the village of San Juan is grateful for their continued oral health with the best dental specialists. It certainly shows in their smiles!
Every patient has different circumstances and expectations. We will tell you about an interesting and unusual case that the doctor was able to turn around with unexpectedly outstanding results.
A patient fell from the roof and the trauma caused his lower teeth to be pushed up into the upper teeth, taking away the bone. Dr. Contreras was able to give him temporary (provisional) teeth on the same day and minimize his pain and discomfort.
