I love my Antigua Guatemala dentist at Clinicas De la Cruz:
Over the last month I have written a few blogs about my experiences in Antigua Guatemala with my dentist. This is a story that has to be told for those thinking that Guatemala lacks advanced cosmetic dentistry. It does not. For those of you that missed the other posts, this is a short version of the story.
I live in Canada part of the year and the other part in Antigua Guatemala. I broke a crown just a few weeks before our planned winter departure to Antigua. We made a quick stop at my family dentist in Toronto and he says you have to go to a specialist, as this is a complicated dental situation. And, you can expect to spend close to $6,000 to have this repaired. My response, “No.”
I asked my local friends for a referral, and they suggested the best dentist in Antigua is Dr Jorge De La Cruz. I called the dentist’s office and we set up an appointment the next day. The first appointment determined that the dentist who placed the crown in Canada had not done a root canal, and I also had an impacted wisdom tooth, so I would need a root channel and new crown. Total cost was about $800, a fraction of what a US or Canadian dentist would charge.
Thus the process began: I hate dental visits and the anticipation of this event was not something I was looking forward with any interest. Dr. De la Cruz did all the prep work, the root canal, and preparation for an impression. I prefer not to use screws in the root channel like most dentists. He takes a mold of the root canal and sends this off to a lab in Guatemala City that makes the post, as they call it, that is glued into place. Then come the mold for the crown.
You may be asking if you read this far did any this hurt. No, not at all. I have to say the way I was treated and handled by all the staff was with care for myself and care for making the perfect crown….
His work is outstanding and his dental assistant is very funny. A joy to work with all of them. You should consider the same.

Dr. De la Cruz fit me in for three appointments on short notice and did twice the work for half the cost of what I was quoted here in the States. It was a little painful at times and one of the appointments was three hours, a long time in the chair, but the work I required was extensive. Two crowns, a root channel and removal of a lot of decay for a very reasonable price. Thank you, Dr. De la Cruz.

Hello Dr. From the Cross,
My name is Lester Giron and I live in Albany New York. I see that you did your post-graduate work at University of Rochester and I’m impressed by the way that your patients recommend you.
I have a very complicated problem with my teeth. I had a comprehensive examination of my teeth and I have lots of problems. Basically, my question is this: What is the cost of 11 crowns? According to my exam, I’m also going to need reconstruction of my front teeth, as they have a very very started space.
This whole problem has occurred because I have the problem of gnashing my teeth and have worn down until the back teeth do not touch and only the front ones are touching. The teeth of the lower jaw are pushing against each other, and at the same time they are pushing the front teeth in the jaw up and this is pushing the teeth forward creating a pronounced space.
My quality of life is being affected because I do not sleep well at night because the jaw muscles are always stressed. Can you help me? I have a bridge that needs to be changed, and I have a molar that was extracted last year and I need an implant or a bridge there. Please let me know if you can help me, and how long you would need, and what is the treatment cost, more or less. I know this is complicated, but maybe you can get the help I need.
Thank you, Lester Giron
Dear Dr. Jorge,
I am the Overseas Adventure traveler who needed an emergency root channel on November 3. I just wanted you to know that I had no more trouble with that tooth after your work on it. No pain at all. My wife and I finished up the tour and missed absolutely nothing. So, thank you again for taking me on short notice and doing such a great job. I can tell you that I would never have guessed that I would find a dentist trained at the University of Rochester, N.Y., in Antigua, Guatemala.
Thanks again for your work.
Sincerely, Chuck Comfort, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, USA
